This article tells the first half of the history of one of the Luftwaffe’s primary tactical reconnaissance units in North Africa. The focus is on its creation in 1938 and early months in the North African campaign, where 2.(H)/14 was one of the first Luftwaffe units to transfer to Libya in February and March 1941, and provided vital support to the ‘Desert Fox’, Erwin Rommel, during his early desert campaigns.

Using primary sources and first-hand accounts, this 21-page article describes the life and challenges experienced by the crews in North Africa. It is illustrated with 24 photos (three in colour), three aircraft profiles and two maps. Five appendices are included.
