Nachtjagd Over The Eastern Front Book Reviews

The Nachtjagd book has received extraordinary comments and reviews from casual readers as well as experienced authors:

The first to offer public comment on the book was noted Nachtjagd historian, Theo Boiten, who wrote: “Last week I received a copy of the book and I can say that the team of authors have succeeded in writing THE benchmark book on the history of the Ostfront Nachtjagd, I am hugely impressed and have sent Morten my warm congratulations on this achievement. It is much more comprehensive than I was able to do in the Nachtjagd Combat Archive series. I wish it every success and hope it will find a wide readers audience!” High praise indeed, but he was not the only one to comment publicly on the title.

My first impressions are great. It’s full of information that’s new to me, at least. The graphic design is beautiful. Clear tables, nice maps, lots of interesting photos. It’s simply amazing.” Commenting privately to Morten in an email, he followed up with “It’s amazing. I can’t get enough of it. A big thank you to the authors and Air War Publishing.

Each new book arriving to my library is submitted to thorough scrutiny. As a book freak, I have a huge collection of invaluable books concerning mostly the Luftwaffe, so looking through a new arrival is compulsory.” Taking his time, Philippe noted “how thorough and serious the authors have undertaken their work to present us a neglected and unknown part of the Second World War history in the air. I think this book would be an unavoidable asset to every air minded book collector. Everything in this book is worth the years of waiting we had before finally got our hands on it. For me, after a deeper read of this book it will get a dedicated place in hand reach on my bookshelves, near the complete Prien collection or JaPo books.

The research is impressive … The bibliography, detailed footnotes and comprehensive index further reinforce the impression of a serious reference work rather than a superficial narrative” Meanwhile, for modeller, Brett observed that, “there is plenty to savour. Extensive photo coverage is complemented by colour aircraft profiles by Claes Sundin and Thomas Retzbach, while maps and the book’s graphic design are by Morten Jessen. The dedicated appendix on camouflage and markings is especially useful, addressing the evolution of Eastern Front night-fighter schemes, fuselage codes and the relatively uncommon application of personal and unit emblems. It also dispels the assumption that these aircraft were generally painted overall black; grey camouflage proved more effective in the night sky.

If you are still not convinced about the value of our latest book, then perhaps the entire review by famed historian of the Luftwaffe on the Eastern Front and author of the Black Cross Red Star: Air War over the Eastern Front, Christer Bergström: “Every once in a while, a work of military history appears that does more than simply add to our knowledge of its subject. It raises the standard by which future books on that subject ought to be judged. Sven Carlsen, Morten Jessen, and Adam Thompson’s Nachtjagd Over the Eastern Front is precisely such a book.

If one wants to see what twenty-first-century military aviation history can and should be – critical, source-driven, visually outstanding, readable, and deeply human—one need look no further. Nachtjagd Over the Eastern Front is quite simply a masterpiece.

Thank you so much for the book. I started reading a few chapters and I am amazed by the depth of information, newly published background and more facts than ever. An incredible accomplishment and I am looking forward to reading more of it“.

Facebook has also been buzzing with various groups and individuals commenting. Piotr commented noted “Magnificent book, worth of every single cent – well worth the wait, day after day! Congratulations to the Authors!“, while Szymon Serwatka on the USAAF over Poland Facebook Group wrote: “What can be better than a coffee and a home-made cake on a warm sunny morning? A great aviation book, a coffee, and a cake are much better! 🙂 ‘Nachtjagd over the Eastern Front’ is a very new book by Sven Carlsen, Morten Jessen, and Adam Thompson. 300+ pages packed with excellent research, photos, maps, stories, covering the Eastern Front from Finland down to the Balkans, from 1939 till the end of the war. The bibliography of archival resources alone is 6 pages long! I particularly value the information about Nachtjagd over Poland. Pilots, aerial victories are mentioned, and a lot of content is provided about collaboration with Luftwaffe radar trains. This is little known aspect of the night fighter operations, and it was high-tech at that time. A solid hard cover book, worth every euro. A must addition to any dedicated WWII aviation history enthusiast!
